PDO threads
Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are absorbable surgical sutures which can be inserted directly into the skin of the face and other parts of the body. With aging the skin becomes thinner and loses elasticity and eventually sags. PDO threads once inserted slowly breakdown over the course of 6 to 8 months, triggering an immune response which ultimately result in increased blood flow to the area and the production of collagen which is the hallmark for thick and youthful skin.
PDO sutures have been used for many years in surgical procedure including internal sutures within the body. They have a well established safety profile with minimal risks with their correct application. This has been transferred into aesthetic medicine. There are three main type of PDO threads that can be used in aesthetic medicine: Rejuvenating, Volume and Lifting.
Rejuvenating
These are thin mono or twin PDO threads which are inserted superficially into the skin in close proximity to one another and at times cross linked with the purpose of increasing blood flow and collagen synthesis in the area of application. These PDO threads can also add volume to sunken areas, treat fine lines and wrinkles and tighten crepey skin, giving an overall revitalized appearance to the face or other parts of the body.
Volume
These are high density PDO threads which can either contain a high number of mono-threads or tightly coiled mono-threads allowing large amounts of PDO to be placed in areas severely lacking volume. This increased density of PDO Threads results in increased collagen production in the application area as well as increased structure to the skin providing additional volume to this area.
Lifting
Lifting PDO threads are inserted into the deeper layer of the skin and contain what is easiest to describe as small barbs along the length of the thread. Once inserted these barbs grasp onto the surrounding tissue allowing elevation of the skin and then anchoring in its new position. Collagen formation still occurs overtime further strengthening the skin. Lifting PDO threads are what is referred to as the non-surgical face lift.
PDO threads offer a new alternative to traditional surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures. Given the wide and extensive range of thread and treatment areas be sure to reach out for more information and find out how PDO threads may work for you.
